Free pre-bid BOM health check

Before you commit to a design in a proposal, you should know which parts in it are headed for obsolescence. Blue Water Components offers a free pre-bid BOM health check: send us a bill of materials of up to 100 line items, and within 2 business days we will return each part's lifecycle and end-of-life status, the parts with less than 5 years of projected life, and which items belong on your monitored list.

This page is for DMSMS leads, capture and proposal teams, engineers, and program managers who want an early read on the obsolescence exposure in a design, especially when an RFP includes DMSMS language drawn from SD-26 or references SD-22.

Free BOM check: up to 100 line items, results within 2 business days

Send us a BOM (up to 100 line items) and within 2 business days we'll show you, at no cost, each part's lifecycle and end-of-life status, which parts have less than 5 years of projected life, and which items belong on your monitored list.

What you get

  • Lifecycle and end-of-life status for each part on the BOM.
  • A list of the parts with less than 5 years of projected life.
  • A recommended list of items to monitor going forward.

That is the full scope of the free check. It is a lifecycle and obsolescence screen. It is not a sourcing, pricing, or supply-chain analysis, and it does not replace your own engineering review or any approval your customer or the government requires.

Why check a BOM before you bid

Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) issues are cheaper to deal with the earlier you find them. Before a bid, you can still swap a part, plan a last-time buy, or write a mitigation plan into your proposal. After award, the same issue can turn into a redesign, a schedule slip, or an unplanned cost.

Programs increasingly look at this up front. SD-26, the DMSMS and Parts Management Contracting Guide from the Defense Standardization Program Office, includes illustrative source selection language under which proposals can be evaluated on the DMSMS health of the designs proposed. It describes healthy designs as having "minimal items with life cycles ending in less than 5 years and mitigation plans in place for the items with short life cycles" (SD-26, June 2026, p. 8). SD-26 is guidance, not a mandate, so read your RFP for the actual requirements. Our guide to SD-26 predictive tools and design health explains those requirements in more detail.

How the check works

  1. Send your BOM through our quote request page. Include manufacturer part numbers and manufacturer names where you have them.
  2. We screen up to 100 line items for lifecycle and end-of-life status.
  3. Within 2 business days, you receive the results: each part's status, the parts with less than 5 years of projected life, and the items we recommend you monitor.

Business days are weekdays, excluding holidays. If your BOM has more than 100 line items, tell us which 100 to start with, or ask us about a larger review.

How the results fit SD-22 and SD-26 practices

SD-22, the DoD DMSMS Guidebook, describes proactive DMSMS management as identifying and monitoring at-risk items before they become problems, rather than reacting after a part is discontinued. A BOM health check is a practical first step toward that: it shows where the short-life parts are so you can decide what to monitor and what to mitigate.

When a contract includes SD-26 monitoring language, the contractor may be asked to analyze items, decide which are proactively monitored, and use predictive tools and life-cycle data to forecast DMSMS issues. The results of a free check can be a starting input to that work and to the design-health story in your proposal. They are not a substitute for your own documented analysis or for the deliverables your contract specifies.

Who we are

Blue Water Components is an AS9120B-certified distributor of electronic components and hardware. We also build SONAR AI, a DMSMS and obsolescence tool for screening and monitoring BOMs. The free check uses that experience to give your team a fast, clear picture of lifecycle risk before a bid.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BOM health check really free?

Yes. We check up to 100 line items at no cost.

How long does it take?

Results are delivered within 2 business days of receiving your BOM.

What does the check include?

Each part's lifecycle and end-of-life status, the parts with less than 5 years of projected life, and which items we recommend you monitor.

What if my BOM has more than 100 line items?

Tell us which 100 line items to check first, or ask us about a larger review.

Does the check satisfy SD-26 requirements?

Not by itself. SD-26 is guidance that becomes binding only when its language is in your contract. The results can be an input to your own DMSMS analysis, monitoring, and proposal.

What are SD-22 and SD-26?

SD-22 is the DoD DMSMS Guidebook. SD-26 is the DMSMS and Parts Management Contracting Guide, with illustrative contract language that program offices can tailor.

How do I send my BOM?

Use our quote request page and attach your BOM.
